Suggestions on first touch
Hello, this post is to see what others have done to be able to touch their Mustang. We have a 8 year old Mustang mare. Her name is Honey, and we have not been able to touch her.
A little about her. My son’s got her for me for my birthday back in April. We were working with her quite regularly, but then I hurt my back. Sense then, I have had back surgery. This has put a lot of restraints on what I can do. I still go into her pen at least 15 to 30 minutes a day. I have hit a wall, I can only get about 5 feet from her and then she runs from me. She is in a 25′ x 48′ pen. We do not have a round pen so I have to work her in there.
Some of the things we have tried is to see if she would eat near us. She will not get close to eat and she is not food motivated. She doesn’t like carrots or treats and will not get withing 10 feet of you even if you have treats for her. We have put presser on her, but she tries hard not to run at you or near you but she will if cornered and has no way around you. Some times you can touch her with a lung stick/dressage stick, but the next few days will take you for ever to touch her with it again. Before I add all the things I have done, I am looking for what others might have in their bag of tricks.
Please chime in on any ideas you might have for us to try. Thank you in advance.
